Background of the Study:
Social media challenges have rapidly become a viral phenomenon, significantly influencing youth behavior by encouraging participation in trending activities. In Onitsha North Local Government, Anambra State, such challenges often promote daring and sometimes hazardous behaviors among young individuals. The pervasive use of social media as a tool for entertainment and peer recognition can lead to risk-taking activities that may have both positive and negative consequences (Ugochukwu, 2023). While some challenges foster creativity, teamwork, and physical fitness, others may encourage dangerous stunts that compromise safety and well-being (Okeke, 2024). These dynamics are exacerbated by the desire for social acceptance and the constant pursuit of online validation. Despite growing awareness, the actual influence of these digital challenges on youth behavior remains ambiguous and is subject to various social, cultural, and psychological factors. Recent studies indicate that while social media can serve as a platform for positive social interactions, it can also contribute to risky behaviors if not properly moderated (Ekwueme, 2023). This study examines the balance between these contrasting effects, providing a nuanced understanding of how social media challenges shape risk-taking behavior among youths in Onitsha North Local Government.

Statement of the Problem:
The popularity of social media challenges raises concerns over the potential for increased risk-taking behaviors among youths in Onitsha North Local Government. Despite some positive outcomes, there is insufficient evidence on the adverse effects and the factors that drive such behaviors. This gap calls for a systematic investigation to understand the extent to which these challenges influence youth actions and decision-making (Ugochukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the influence of social media challenges on youth risk-taking behavior in Onitsha North Local Government.

  2. To identify factors that promote risky behavior through digital challenges.

  3. To suggest interventions to mitigate negative outcomes.

Research Questions:

  1. How do social media challenges influence risk-taking behavior among youths?

  2. What factors contribute to the engagement in risky online challenges?

  3. How can negative outcomes of these challenges be minimized?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Social media challenges significantly increase risk-taking behavior among youths.

  2. Peer pressure and the need for validation positively influence participation in risky challenges.

  3. Interventions and awareness programs reduce the negative impact of such challenges.

Significance of the Study:
This study will provide valuable insights for educators, parents, and policymakers on developing strategies to mitigate harmful risk-taking behaviors among youths influenced by social media challenges in Onitsha North Local Government (Nwankwo, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to evaluating the influence of social media challenges on risk-taking behavior among youths in Onitsha North Local Government, Anambra State.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Social Media Challenges: Viral online trends encouraging participants to perform specific tasks.

  2. Risk-Taking Behavior: Actions that involve potential danger or harm.

  3. Peer Pressure: The influence exerted by a peer group encouraging conformity.
